In the time of Solomon, the best of kings, a man bought a nightingale that had an exceptional voice. He placed him in a cage in which the bird lacked nothing and in which it sang, for hours on end, to enchant the neighbourhood.
One day, when the cage had been transported to a balcony, another bird approached, said something to the nightingale, and flew away. From that moment on, the incomparable nightingale was silent.
In desperation, the man brought his bird to the presence of the prophet Solomon, who knew the language of animals, and asked him to ask the bird the reason for his silence.
The nightingale said to Solomon:
– Before, I didn't know neither hunter nor cage. Then they introduced me to a trap, with a very appetizing bait, and I fell into it, driven by my desire. The bird hunter took me, sold me in the market, far from my family, and I ended up in the cage of this man there. I began to lament night and day, laments that this man took for a song of gratitude and joy. Until the day when another bird came to tell me: “Stop crying, because it's because of your moans that they keep you in this cage”. So I decided to shut up.
Solomon translated these few sentences for the bird's owner. The man asked himself:
– What's the use of keeping a nightingale trapped if it doesn't sing? - And it gave him his freedom back.
