Who's Afraid of Demetrio Latov?

“At night, Monday, August 12th

The most important thing is that this morning my school life began […]
Dad drove me to school. On the way I was happy, but when we arrived I was a little scared. It was a jumble of people inside and outside the building.
I went in alone.
There were children running all over the place. They screamed. I don't know how they could scream like that at this time of morning. Then a bell rang and everyone fell silent. At that moment there was as much silence as in the city cemetery. In the silence, I noticed that some children were looking at me.

First I saw a redhead with his body paralyzed in a running position (he's been like that since he rang the bell) and with his eyes glued to me. But the eyes weren't frozen. They strayed and circled back and forth. Then I turned around and noticed that there was a chubby one looking at me too. I turned to the front again and this time it was a girl with braids. Then another one with curly hair. The looks seemed to say, “Hey, who is this one? Are you a new student? That's weird!".
Another bell rang. The frozen bodies thawed instantly and began to move and advance in opposite directions. In less than a second, all the children were gone.
