Chocolate emerged over 3,000 years ago as a drink of the Mayan peoples (who lived in what is now South America). At the time, cocoa, the fruit that gives rise to chocolate, was so noble that it was only consumed by very rich people. To make it sweeter, it was sweetened with honey and spices, and what is now called chocolate was called cocoahatl (cocoa water) or xocoatl (bitter water). Cocoa was used as an offering to the gods of the Maya and when they discovered that its seed could be processed, roasted and ground to form a paste, the first form of chocolate.
