The constitutional text of 1824 established the foundations for the organization of the monarchic State and the nation during the Empire, but, at the same time, it was the target of disputes, criticisms and interpretations. The Constitutional Charter of 1824 was written by a small group of people handpicked by D. Pedro I: politicians from some of the main families of owners and businessmen living in the Center-South region of Portuguese America, which since the time of D. João VI occupied important positions in the public administration and who had served in the Constituent Assembly. In the view of members of republican associations formed in Brazil from 1870 onwards, the 1824 Charter was an expression of the “absolutism” of D. Pedro, a clear demonstration that independence had not brought about substantial changes in colonial power relations.
