Volcanoes in Brazil have been extinct for a few tens of millions of years. The country benefits from being at the center of the South American tectonic plate. The most recent volcanic activity in Brazil occurred about 65 million years ago, and resulted in the formation of oceanic islands such as Trindade and Fernando de Noronha. The city of Poços de Caldas (MG) is located in the crater of an ancient volcano that collapsed. That's why the city is circular.
The oldest volcano found in Brazil is located 1,600 km from Belém, in the Tapajós river basin. It is 1.85 billion years old, 22 km in diameter and gave rise to large deposits of gold, copper and molybdenum. On its edges, the caldera has other small volcanoes, created due to the pressure of the magma.
