The US Department of State identified that the Secretary of Commerce and other employees of the institution had their email accounts violated. A Microsoft was notified of the system vulnerability and needed to act to stop the attacks.
Among the affected institutions was a human rights organization that was prevented from detecting the hacker attack. According to Volexity, a company specializing in cybersecurity, the impediment occurred because they did not have the premium Microsoft license.
Therefore, Microsoft had to take concrete measures and identified that the attacks came from China. The tech company believes it was an espionage campaign to access valuable US data.
At press time, the group has been identified as Storm-0558. These hackers are known to steal data and credentials from numerous government departments and organizations.
Following that, Microsoft announced the new cybersecurity feature that allows responsible teams to access important data to prevent further cyberattacks.
The incident highlighted the importance of accessing critical data on systems. The US Cyber Security and Infrastructure Agency (CISA) has even reported that its own investigation of invasions was hampered by the lack of information that entails an extra cost in the services of the Microsoft.
