A medication that is useful for the treatment of respiratory diseases can also be used in the treatment of Parkinson's. This is Ambroxol, which is an expectorant syrup.
The research, led by Professor Anthony Schapira at the UC Queen Square Institute, showed that the discovery could be very advantageous. The chemical is helpful in clearing the mucus in the body and bringing immediate relief to the cough, it also has great anti-inflammatory content and, in the case of Parkinson's, there are great chances of delaying the evolution of the disease.

Better Health in Two Days: The Surprising Effectiveness of End Workouts…
The results of the second phase were published in January 2020, when they began testing Ambroxol in people with Parkinson's. Research showed that the chemical reached the brain effectively and increased the amount of the protein GCase (grucocerebrosidase).
GCase's job is to give new cells permission to remove waste from other proteins, including the protein that builds up the cell that causes Parkinson's, alpha-synuclein. The studies also proved that the medication was safe for people who had the disease and that everyone responded well to the tests.
The third phase will be coordinated by Professor Schapira, in partnership with Cure Parkinson’s Van Andel Institute, a British charity. The tests will be carried out with 330 people who have Parkinson's, and the participants will use Ambroxol for about two years.
Now, the effectiveness will be proven by delaying the progression of Parkinson's for these people. So far, the information is that the preparation for the study has already begun.
“I am delighted to lead this exciting project. This will be the first time that a drug applied specifically to a genetic cause of Parkinson's disease has reached this level of testing and represents ten years of extensive and detailed work in the laboratory and in a clinical test", said the professor, ensuring that the testing phase has shown good results.
