Species was considered extinct in the early 20th century
The Jasmine tapir was released today (29) in the Guapiaçu Ecological Reserve (Regua), in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro, Cachoeiras de Macacu, where it will live free. In a movement to preserve the species, the Guarulhos Zoo donated the animal to the reserve, where, since last August, Jasimim has been in an acclimatization area of one hectare. The species was considered extinct in the beginning of the 20th century, due to predatory hunting.
The executive coordinator of the Guapiaçu Project, from Regua, Gabriela Viana, told Agência Brasil that Jasmim, daughter of the tapirs Antônia and Antenor, who remain at the private zoo in Guarulhos, will continue to receive food until they learn to live together with other animals in their species Tapirus terrestris who are living in this forest in the state of Rio de Janeiro. “She is already beginning to discover foods in nature that she is able to search for. The idea is for her to learn to live by herself”, said Gabriela. The Guapiaçu Project will monitor Jasmine through a telemetry necklace.
The Refauna Project team, from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), will be accompanying Jasmine, who will have free access to the acclimatization nursery where he stayed for the last 60 days. Gabriela informed that the team will gradually withdraw the food that is provided, so that she does not feel any nutritional deficiency. “She's going to fit in with the others and we hope they'll have more puppies soon,” said the executive coordinator of the Guapiaçu Project.
