Dulcina de Moraes is considered the greatest Brazilian theater actress of all times. The numbers are impressive: she starred in 121 plays and directed 93, all of them great successes.
The theater has always been his reason for living – since the cradle! Daughter of Atila and Conchita de Moraes, she was born on February 3, 1908, in the city of Valença / RJ, during a tour of the theater group of which her parents were part.
Since she was a baby, Dulcina lived in the aisles of theaters, accompanying her parents. It didn't take long for her to take risks as an actress. Her debut as a protagonist took place when she was just 15 years old. The play was “Travessuras de Berta”, and it was a resounding success.
From then onwards, she joined the most important theater companies until she created her own, in 1935, together with her husband, Odilon Azevedo, whom she married in 1931. […]
Dulcina designed a majestic career as an actress on stage, became director and manager of Cia. Dulcina e Odilon, became an international success, brought new authors to Brazil (Garcia Lorca is one of them), revealed talents and opened the first higher education institution dedicated to theatre.
She mastered what actors call “comedy time” like no one else, that is, the joke or funny gesture made at the perfect moment to make the audience laugh. His way of interpreting, his facial expressions and characteristic laughter influenced generations of actresses.
In 1955, Dulcina realized a great dream, with the creation of the Brazilian Theater Foundation (FBT), a professional training center for actors and actresses. She dedicated the rest of her life and all her savings to this project.
Dulcina came to perform in Brasília on the occasion of the city's 3rd anniversary, in 1963. It was love at first sight. He moved permanently to the city in 1972, taking with him his beloved Foundation.
There were almost ten years of waiting, but finally, in 1982, she opened the Faculty of Arts Dulcina de Moraes, right in the center of Brasília. From then on, she began to dedicate herself exclusively to teaching acting at college.
Dulcina died on August 28, 1996, in Brasília. She was an admirable woman, who left a great legacy for actors and audiences: humor, perseverance, professionalism and love for the theater.
