The Atlantic Forest is one of the richest forests in the diversity of life on the planet. When Brazil was discovered in 1500, it covered the coast from Rio Grande do Norte to Santa Catarina, occupying more than 1.3 million km². However, due to occupation and human activities in the region, today approximately 29% of its original coverage remains.
Still, it remains the rainforest with the greatest variety of life forms per square meter. It is estimated that there are about 20 thousand plant species there (35% of the species existing in Brazil, approximately), including several endemic species, that is, that only grow there, and threatened by extinction. The most common trees are cedar, ipê, jequitibá, pau-brasil, palm and cinnamon.
In terms of fauna, the biome is home to approximately 850 species of birds, 370 of amphibians, 200 of reptiles, 270 of mammals and 350 of fish. The capuchin monkey, the toucan, the anteater and the golden lion tamarin deserve to be highlighted.
A very threatened biome
The Atlantic Forest covers the largest cities and metropolitan regions in Brazil. It covers 17 Brazilian states: Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Paraná, São Paulo, Goiás, Mato Grosso do Sul, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, Bahia, Sergipe, Alagoas, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Rio Grande do Norte, Ceará and Piauí. It is home to more than 145 million inhabitants – about 72% of the Brazilian population!
Its importance is enormous to these people. It gives rise to the water that supplies cities and fields, and that generates energy in hydroelectric plants; its vegetation regulates and balances the local climate, in addition to protecting slopes, preventing erosion and landslides; its fertile soil produces food, wood, fiber, oils and medicines.
Despite being vital for so many people, the Atlantic Forest is decreasing day by day, threatened by disorderly human occupation and the advanced degradation of its natural cover.
In an attempt to protect the biome, in 1988, the Federal Constitution recognized it as “national heritage”. And, in 2006, the Atlantic Forest Law was enacted, which regulated the protection and use of forest resources.
