Garbage collection is the responsibility of the city halls and, therefore, the salary varies a lot. In some poorer municipalities, a street sweeper earns less than the minimum wage.
However, in the Federal Senate there is a bill that provides for the implementation of a national floor of R$ 1,200 per month for workers in all Brazilian cities who carry out activities in the collection of trash.

The bill (PL) pending in the Senate determines that street sweepers' working hours cannot be exceed 36 hours a week, subject to the provisions defined in collective agreements of the categories.
With the approval of the text, the Gari's unhealthy work additional must be paid in "maximum degree" and wages will be corrected annually, in the month of January, by the National Consumer Price Index (INPC) or by a higher percentage, defined in agreement collective.
The PL also provides that to be a street sweeper, the person must have completed elementary school and will be hired preferably through a public tender, or, in the case of outsourcing the collection service trash.
