Teacher from Rio Grande do Sul tells children's stories in LIBRAS on YouTube

Children's storytelling takes children to a magical world, making them travel through completely different places and times. This awakening of the imagination is highly beneficial and should, without a doubt, be extended to everyone, hence the importance of inclusion. In this sense, a professor at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul had the idea of telling stories on a YouTube channel. Detail: in LIBRAS.

The “Adventurous Hands” project was created by professor Carolina Hessel, from the Faculty of Education at UFRGS, responsible for implementing the LIBRAS discipline at the unit. According to her, this is a pioneering initiative in Brazil and her inspiration came from her taste in adapting literary stories to the Brazilian Sign Language since she worked in schools for the deaf. The channel already has 5,000 subscribers.

Its purpose is to always update the available content, choosing the stories according to demand and the time in which it will tell them. In the repertoire, there are classic works such as “O sandwich da Maricota”, by Avelino Guedes, “O presente do Saci”, by Lalau & Laurabeatriz, “Carona na Vassoura”, by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, to “Adelia”, by Jean-Claude Alphen (winner of the tortoise).

“Mãos Aventureiras”, therefore, differs from other sites that only contain classic texts such as the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm. Carolina's goal is to reach not only schools for the deaf but also conventional ones. “I want to give access to more diverse and quality children's literature for this audience”, she comments.
