Why does breathing with your mouth open change the shape of your face?

Did you know that breathe through the mouth may have some bad consequences for the formation of facial bones? According to a survey carried out by the sleepQ+ website, this custom can cause abnormalities in the growth of the bones of the face, as well as cause sleep-related problems.

And that's not all: sleeping with your mouth open can cause aesthetic issues, such as a double chin, for example.

Why is keeping your mouth shut important?

The ideal is to keep your mouth closed when you sleep, not only for aesthetic reasons, but also because we don't know what could end up entering our mouth without realizing it. According to sleepQ+, breathing through the mouth should only be used when there is some impediment to using the nose to breathe.

Influencer tests “gluing” the mouth to sleep

One of the new trends is taping the mouth before going to sleep to keep it closed during the night and avoid alterations in the facial structure.

Digital influencer Olivia Sweet decided to test this technique on herself. She posted some videos on her Tiktok account, talking about how she intended to show her test results in the future.

About a month later, the girl posted a new video showing the "after" of sleeping for 30 days with her mouth closed with the aid of tape, showing what she described as a "more defined jaw".

What are the problems of sleeping with your mouth glued?

The problem with sticking your mouth shut during sleep is that, many times, our body compensates for air intake when our nostrils are blocked.

Therefore, there is a certain danger in taping the mouth overnight. In addition, the habit of breathing through the mouth, especially when it occurs over the years during the development stage of a child (going through adolescence and reaching adulthood), can cause changes in the posture of the head and neck and deform the arch dental.

Conclusion

Breathing with your mouth open can change the shape of your face and lead to health problems. Keeping the mouth closed while sleeping is important not only to avoid alterations in the facial structure, but also to prevent foreign bodies from entering the mouth.

However, taping your mouth overnight can have negative health consequences, especially if your nostrils are blocked. The ideal is to seek medical treatment for breathing problems and, if necessary, use devices that help with breathing during sleep.
