An important thinker in his area, he was a pioneer in the notion that children's intellectual development occurs as a result of social interactions and living conditions. He came to be discovered by western academic circles many years after his death, which occurred in 1934, from tuberculosis, at the age of 37.
The Law of Guidelines and Bases (Law 9394/96) – LDB – is the organic and general law of Brazilian education. As the name implies, it dictates the guidelines and bases for organizing the educational system. According to former Minister Paulo Renato Souza – who, alongside President Fernando Henrique Cardoso, sanctioned the LDB that was in force until today – “the most interesting thing about the LDB is that it runs away from what is, unfortunately, what is most common in Brazilian legislation: being very detail-oriented. The LDB is not detailed, it gives a lot of freedom to schools, to the education systems of municipalities and states, setting general rules. I think it's really exemplary law.” ¹
The LDB-Lei de Diretrizes e Bases is a fundamental normative instrument for defining a national system of education, because it is through it that all the instrumentalization and standardization of educational processes takes place national.
