The bird measures 8.6 cm and weighs about 2.2 grams, which is even lighter than the red tuft. One of the smallest Brazilian hummingbirds feeds mainly on nectar, but also eats small arthropods.

It is found from the Guianas and Venezuela to Bolivia and Brazil to São Paulo. It lives in the lower ______________ of humid forests and in adjacent semi-open areas, heaps, gardens and backyards, easily going unnoticed. It flies low with a high-pitched buzz similar to that of a large bee.
