The animal is among the 25 most threatened primate species in the world.
The genus Brachyteles has only two species and both are threatened with extinction. They are the northern muriqui and the southern muriqui, considered the largest primates in the Americas. Endemic to the Atlantic Forest, they occur only in Brazil.
Of great ecological importance, muriquis can disperse, in a single day, seeds of different plant species. Therefore, they are considered one of the largest dispersers and restorers of the Atlantic Forest, which today only has 12% of its original coverage.
The monkey measures approximately 1.5 meters tall and weighs up to 15 kilograms. It lives for around 30 years and, unfortunately, is among the 25 most threatened primate species in the world. This is due to the fragmentation and degradation of its habitat, hunting, agricultural expansion and disorderly tourism.
As it is a large primate, it has unique and long-range vocalization. Despite the ease of identifying it by the sound it emits, its populations are scarce and they live in mountainous areas, which are difficult to access, making the chances of encountering a muriqui rare.
The species have almost the same diet. They are herbivorous animals, which feed on various plants, bark, flowers, pollen, nectar and seeds. […]
Sociable, muriquis usually live in groups of four to dozens of individuals. […] With diurnal habits, they spend the day swinging from trees with their prehensile tail.
A very peculiar characteristic of these animals is that they like to show affection by hugging. […]
