The decision to abolish slavery was not made overnight, it took many years and went through many revolts. Some movements such as the Inconfidência Mineira and the Conjuração Baiana that proposed to replace slave labor with free labor. But the Brazilian agrarian structure was against it, and instead they wanted to intensify the slave trade, as this guaranteed cheap labor.
In 1831, the law that declared free blacks who entered Brazil from that date was promulgated, but this law was never obeyed.
In 1850 trafficking was banned, but that too was useless.
In 1,871, the Free Womb Law was approved, which declared the children of slaves born after that date free. This law said that children had to stay with mothers who were slaves.
In 1885, the Sexagenarian Law was created, which declared slaves over 60 years old free.
On May 13, 1888 the Imperial Princess Regent D. Isabel signed the Lei Áurea, which abolished slavery in Brazil. This happened at approximately 3 pm, at the Paço da Liberdade. To sign the Law, the Princess used a pen made of gold and precious stones, offered by the abolitionists.
