On my desk, in the newsroom, I found him on a hot summer afternoon. It is an insect that looks like an airplane with four translucent wings and likes to fly over ponds, streams and puddles.
It is an animal from the forest and not from the city. But what was he doing there, on my table, in the heart of the metropolis? He looked dead, but I noticed that he was nervously moving his strange, tiny jaws. He was dying of thirst, maybe he could save him. I took him by the wings and took him to the bathroom. After settling him in a corner of the sink, I wet my hand and let the water drip over his head and wings. He remained still. Yeah, he's hopeless anymore, I thought to myself. But then he shivers all over and moves his wet mouth. All the water had run out, it was necessary to find a way to keep it within reach without, however, drowning it. The other sink maybe this way more. I transferred him there, accommodated him, and went back to the newsroom.
But the memory had taken another turn. Back home, our group of boys called this little flying monkey and it was fun for us to hunt them down, tie them up with a string and let them fly over our heads. He also remembered the dam, on the farm, where they appeared in squadron formation and landed in the dark water. But what the hell was this flying monkey doing on Avenida Rio Branco? Had he flown here from Coroatá, just to find me? Was he a strange message from nature to this deserter?
I went back to the bathroom and in time to prevent the servant from killing him. "Don't do this to the poor guy!" “Poor nothing, this animal must cause illness!”.
I took it from the man's hand and put it back in the sink. The man was startled and left, not knowing what ties of affection and history bound me to that strange being. I fixed him, gave him water and went back to work. But the weather urged, texts, news, phone calls, I went home without remembering him anymore.
