It may be small, but it draws huge attention with its intense colors. Yellow and red predominate in different shades and it stands out even when swimming in dark water streams – but clean! – from southern Brazil, the region where he lives.
It turns out that seeing the golden tetra or lambari-da-restinga is something rare. For this little fish to appear, the environment in which it lives must be preserved and have a large supply of food. Microcrustaceans, aquatic and terrestrial insects, mosquito larvae, algae and arachnids are part of its menu.
At mealtime, at least five of these small fish gather, forming a school that follows in search of food.
It is easy to distinguish males and females in this species. The male has a slimmer belly and is more taut, in addition to stronger colors. He also has a little hook on his fin that he has attached to his belly. This hook is what helps him keep close to the female during mating time. Speaking of females… They are less colorful and have a wider and plumper belly, especially during the reproduction period. When seeing a female in these conditions, the males become aggressive among themselves to dispute the position of her boyfriend.
The environment in which the golden tetra lives is threatened by the disorderly growth of cities. The appearance of many buildings and condominiums makes the natural balance disappear, harming countless species, among them our super-colored goldfish.
