Properties of water: water is a kind of solvent

In this post we will share with you a little about the properties of water.

Water is the most important substance on our planet. It is what guarantees animal and plant life. Without it, there is no life.

And has water properties very interesting, that we don't even understand how it works.

  • The properties of water:

Water is a kind of solvent

The water even being in its pure state, falling from the rain, it brings impurities that are dissolved in its composition.

Water is a solvent as it is possible to dissolve various substances in it. It has no smell, color or taste, what makes it different are the substances added to it.

Substances that dilute, or better, dissolve in others, such as salt, are called solute. A substance capable of dissolving another is considered a solvent.

When the solvent associates with the solute, it gets the name of solution. This process of water dissolution is very important for the existence of life.

In our blood the substance sugars, minerals and vitamins are transported by the blood stream dissolved by water.

In vegetables, mineral salts and sugar dissolved in water are transported to their roots.

In living organisms there are numerous chemical reactions to exist for life and also processes in the digestive tract. All processes depend on water to take place in the body.

thermal regulator

Water has the ability to absorb and conserve heat. By day, water absorbs some of the sun's heat and talks this water until night. Then it returns the heat it has absorbed from the environment.

This thermal regulation is small between day and night in coastal regions. In urban cities, however, this temperature difference is greater.

Between the water properties this makes the elimination of heat, or sweating, an important mechanism among us humans and animals to control body temperature.

Your properties

Floating or sinking?

As it may be, a nail can sink and a ship float. In water, lifting a person doesn't require a lot of effort. This is because water pushes the body up. And this mechanism of water is called buoyancy.

When this thrust (E) is equal to the weight (P) the object tends to float, but when the weight of the object is greater than the thrust, it sinks.

When the submarine sinks, it increases its weight by filling its tanks with its own seawater.

exerting pressure

When we try to hold it with a jet of water that comes out of the hose with our finger, it is prevented from flowing and ends up exerting more pressure and more force.

In general, all existing liquids exert pressure. To show the pressure exerted on a column of liquid, you need to drill holes in a 2 liter plastic bottle and fill it with water.

Among the properties of water, this indicates that the pressure worked by a liquid increases with depth. The flow of water through the first hole will be less than the flow through two holes.

And the greater the depth or height of the liquid, the greater the distance that the stream of water reaches.

The pressure in diving

Between the water properties In this the person, when diving, feels pain and pressure in the inner part of the ear. This is related to the pressure exerted on the water.

During the dive, the deeper, the height of the liquid column above you increases. And because of that, the depths of the sea have such great pressure that devices are needed to reach deeper.

______

the water molecule

The molecular formula of the water molecule is: H2O.

The structural formula of the water molecule is:

Structural formula of the water molecule

Water has a triangular, non-linear structural formula, the hydrogen atoms forming an angle of 104.5º between them.

chemical reactions

It participates in two ways in chemical reactions, as a reagent or as a product.

  • Reagent - Hydrolysis
  • Product - Synthesis by Dehydration

Temperature Moderator

Specific high heat – Absorbs and gives off large amounts of heat with small temperature change.

High Heat of Vaporization – Because of this property, the water absorbs large amounts of heat from the surfaces it is in contact with, as it evaporates it cools the place.
