We are always aware of animals that make the list of endangered animals. We recently received news that eastern gorillas, bees and giraffes are going through this sad process. In addition to these animals, another is at risk: cheetahs.
Scientists have announced that the cheetah could go into extinction even sooner. A study carried out by
Zoological Society of London (ZSL), in partnership with Wildlife Conservation Society, estimates that there are only 7,100 individuals of the species living in 9% of its natural territory. Most of these cats live in Africa. Its biggest threat is the illegal trade in animals and skins, which pays up to $10,000 for a baby cheetah. In Zimbabwe, in just ten years, the number of individuals increased from 1,200 animals to 170. In Asia, there are an estimated 50 individuals surviving in Iran.
One of the biggest difficulties in finding out about this drastic reduction in cheetahs is the absence of reliable sources, according to researcher Sarah Durant, who is the leader of the study.
Another species threatened by the greed and ignorance of people who pay a high price to have an animal whose life is in nature, often motivated by the vanity of displaying a species wild. People like that have been contributing each year to the growing red list of endangered animals.
