According to the New Orthographic Agreement for the Portuguese Language, signed in 2009, the compound word “welcome” is always written with a hyphen. The hyphen usage rule determines that it be used in compound words that contain the adverbs “good” and “bad” in cases where the second word begins with a vowel. This, in fact, is the case of “welcome”.
This compound word is formed through the so-called juxtaposition composition. This means, in other words, that the two words that make it up still have independent meanings.
