Jean-Baptiste Poquelin was born in Paris in 1622. The son of a rug seller, he lost his mother very early, at age ten. He received a solid Jesuit education and studied to become a lawyer. He became acquainted with Tiberio Fiorelli, known as Scaramouche, a famous French comedian from at the time, and with actress Madeleine Béjart, which led him to renounce his legal career and dedicate himself to theater. With Madeleine and a dozen other comedians, he founded the company L’ Illustre Thêatre in 1643. The start of the troupe was disastrous, and Jean-Baptiste, who now introduced himself as Molière, was eventually arrested for debts in 1645. But some of the company's members remained loyal to Molière and left Paris with him to tour the French countryside.
