NAME:
The Friar's Crown (scientific name Melocactus bahiensis) is a cactus from the Caatinga biome, rounded, small and flat, reaching up to 12 centimeters in height. It has mixed thorns, thick and thin, and flowers in pink and red tones, which are much sought after by bees. It is only in its adult phase that cephalium develops – a kind of crown that forms on its top with a beautiful shade of red. Hence the name of this plant, whose shape resembles the bald head of a Franciscan friar.
Usually found among stones, this type of cactus is used for medicinal purposes, food and as a decorative plant. People in the Semiarid region usually make tea to treat kidney and bowel diseases. It is also widely used by farmers to feed farm animals, as it has a good reserve of water and protein. Its fruit is pink in color and resembles an almond. But it is the entire plant that is used as an ingredient to make cakes, sweets and cookies.
The corona-de-frade cactus sweet is one of the most sought after in the municipality of Poço Redondo, in Sergipe. Dessert is made with water, sugar, powdered cinnamon and cloves. But first, it is important to remove the thorns well!
