Imagine watching, on TV, a children's story in which the prince falls in love with a lady from the “Palace of the Monkeys”. She is played by a white actress with her face painted entirely in black. When kissed by the prince, sealing the union under the king's blessings, she transforms: the black ink disappears and she is now an all white princess.
The appalling prejudice manifested in the story was not shown in a comedy program (which would not make it less reprehensible), neither in a poor and inconsequential foreign production, nor in independent Brazilian production. It was aired on the largest television network in Latin America, one of the largest in the world, in one of the most watched children's programs in Brazil.
