In celebration of Infectious Diseases, celebrated on April 11, let's get to know what this professional does. The infectologist is the doctor capable of diagnosing and treating infectious diseases that can be caused by viruses, bacteria, fungi, among other microorganisms.
The date was chosen by the Brazilian Society of Infectology as it is the birthday of Emílio Ribas, physician sanitarist who worked intensively to combat infectious diseases such as yellow fever, smallpox and tuberculosis. To get an idea of his dedication, Emílio Ribas allowed himself to be bitten by an infected mosquito to prove that yellow fever was not contagious and that its means of transmission was only by the bite of an insect contaminated. He was born in 1862 and died in 1925 in São Paulo.
