Cais do Sertão Museum: from Pernambuco to the world
Opened on April 3, 2014, the museum holds a cultural history
The Cais do Sertão Museum is named for being on the water’s edge, next to Marco Zero, where the city of Recife was born, and for housing the richness of the hinterland and mangroves. With seven thousand square meters of built area, six meters high, the space has a large gap for pedestrians, in addition to details in colors, masonry and decoration. All meticulously planned.
On the ground floor, a strip of running water – inspired by the São Francisco River – divides the Museum into seven thematic territories: Living, Working, Occupying, Singing, Creating, Believing and Migrating. Each environment refers to the main aspects of the country's daily life and allows the visitor to move around the space and interact with the exhibition artifacts.
Real objects mingle with projections. Hats, doublets and accordions dialogue with country karaoke, recording studios and instrument workshops from which old and new baião sprout. Art and religious objects share space with an immense collection of songs. Boats, work instruments and satellite dishes complement interactive stations.
In a playful way and with the most varied and modern exhibition and technological resources, the Cais do Sertão Museum portrays the hinterland of Gonzaga and millions of Brazilians. The space displays films, plays and shows. The visitor can interact with challenging games, take courses, create music, or simply discover the unknown. The Wharf is an important space for coexistence between equals and different people.
The composer, instrumentalist and singer Luiz Gonzaga was born in Exu, Araripe, on December 13, 1912. He inherited from his father, Januário José dos Santos, the passion for the accordion and left to his son, Gonzaguinha, the legacy of singing the joys and sorrows of the people of Sertão Nordestino.
