Cradle of former president of the republic Juscelino Kubitschek and Francisca da Silva de Oliveira, Chica da Silva, Diamantina is located in Vale do Jequitinhonha, and is approximately 290 km from Belo Horizon. The municipality draws attention for its exuberant natural beauty which, in harmony with its preserved and majestic 18th century houses, translates into a wonderful postcard.
Owner of an extensive historical heritage, the city is listed by the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute (IPHAN) since 1938 and, in December 1999, was consecrated with the title of Historical Heritage of Humanity, granted by the UNESCO. Among the oldest colonial buildings, stand out the Church of Nossa Senhora do Bonfim dos Militares, the Casa da Chica da Silva, the Chafariz do Rosário, among others.
Diamantina has a unique musicality, manifested through a series of events artistic-cultural, as well as its handicrafts, that make the city a destination for the most diversified likes. A Vesperata, one of the main events in the city, is an interesting open-air night concert, where musicians play under the balconies of the houses on the traditional Rua da Quitanda.
In Market Square, the Mercado Velho (also known as Mercado do Tropeiro), built in 1835, draws attention for its Arab-influenced architecture. It was used by the drovers as a hub for the distribution of goods for the Jequitinhonha Valley. Nowadays, it attracts tourists for its scenic uniqueness and the sale of typical regional products.
Amidst the mountains and mountains of Diamantina, there are waterfalls that give rise to delicious natural pools of white sand. The city also has a vast cultural manifestation, marked by its famous street carnival during Holy Week and the Festa do Patroeiro Santo Antônio, among others.
