Read:

biggest armadillo in the world

The giant armadillo (Priodont maximus), also known as the giant armadillo, can measure up to 1.5 meters in length and weigh 60 kilograms, equivalent to the approximate size and weight of a 13-year-old person.

Characteristic of the Cerrado, it can also be found in other biomes in Brazil and Latin America such as the Amazon, Pantanal and Atlantic Forest, but the occurrence is considered rare.

In the giant armadillo menu, there are predominantly termites and ants. The young of the species are preyed on by pumas and jaguars, while adults are hardly preyed upon, as the strong carapace protects them.

In English and Spanish, the armadillo is called “armadillo”, which means “small armored”. This popular name is given to it because of its carapace, which is a protection against predators and a shield against thorns that can injure it wherever it goes.

The family that comprises armadillos is the Dasypodidae and is unique to the Americas. Within it, there are eight armadillo genera and 21 species. In Brazil, according to researcher Danilo Kluyber, from Projeto Armadillo-canastra, at least ten are known.
